Community Organizing

Congratulations to the Maverick Workers!!
After many hours organizing, meeting with the community, and conducting delegations to Maverick Framing, the Maverick workers have finally been paid.  A total of $34,108 were recovered in unpaid wages. This is a prime example of how when people come together to fight for their rights, justice is possible.

Shame on Jostes Concrete!!
Nov 11, 2008
Jostes Concrete Workers and community leaders held a press conference today to denounce the exploitation of workers by companies such as Jostes Concrete.  The company has lied for months to its workers, selling them false hopes and promises of pay.  After coming home day after day without pay, the workers have joined together and vow to continue fighting for what they are owed.  The company's attempts to intimidate and scare the workers with threats were unproductive.  For more on this click here.

With an increase in anti-immigrant legislation at the state legislature, local elected officials implementing punitive measures, and exploitation of workers increasing, the Phoenix area is in dire need of opportunities for immigrants to unite to fight for their rights.

PUEBLO provides a space for people to unite for collective action that redresses injustices in the community.  Whether it be workers organizing to claim wages unjustly held from them, or tenants of an apartment complex coming together to stand-up to their landlord, PUEBLO organizers and the
direct services department work together to provide holistic responses to community needs.

GOALS & STRATEGIES

PUEBLO understands that the immigrant community in Arizona faces a myriad of challenges, from the workplace, to the neighborhoods they live in.  Our goal is simply to facilitate individual and community actions that lead to an improved quality of life.  We strive for the recognition that all human beings deserve quality health care, a decent education, an ability to influence their environment, the opportunity to love, and the opportunity to organize and unite – these are the results that PUEBLO seeks to assist its members to achieve for themselves.

PUEBLO's Direct Services and Community Organizing Departments' strategies include:

Community Education and Outreach
– PUEBLO conducts outreach to the  Spanish-speaking Latino and immigrant families through informal community networks.  During our conversations, PUEBLO gathers information about priority needs and develops educational programming and information services that relate directly to those needs.  Some examples are:  English classes, assistance with filling out documents and access to understanding the immigration system (or lack of), referrals for legal and other professional assistance, financial education, and housing.  The list of services grows as new service and information needs are identified by the current membership.

Community Organizing – PUEBLO works with members to organize  around critical issues through a committee,  or comite,  structure.  Individual members come together to identify community issues that impact their lives, identify possible solutions, and work together to influence decision makers and policy changes to create change.

Strategic Action Plans - PUEBLO's committees prioritize issues and then develop strategic action plans. Each plan follows a structure of direct action advocacy so that committees can address a range of issues.  Some examples include organizing actions against employers who refuse to pay their workers, or organizing against slumlords.

Holding Decision Makers Accountable - PUEBLO's committees and supporters believe that local decision-makers should be held accountable for the needs and interests of their constituents.  PUEBLO promotes civic participation, encouraging members to stand up against the racism in Arizona, through participation in direct actions and collaborating with local community campaigns that promote justice, human liberties, workers' rights, and specifically those that fight racism.
